List of Open Access
Journals for the Medical Entomologist
Open acces journals do not charge the reader for
downloading scientific articles. Here is a list of
open access journals which - at least occasionally -
contain papers on the ecology, behaviour and applied
aspects of the biology of mosquitoes and other disease
vectors. We hope the list
is helpful for medical and veterinary
entomologists or anybody else interested
in vector borne diseases.
If you know of an open access journal not
listed here and which fits the scope of this list, or
if you discover a mistake, please drop a line: andreas.rose biogents.com.
Thank you! (All links open a new browser window. Journals
which are not completey open access, but charge the
authors for their paper to become open access are not
included.)
- Quite a few "open
access journals" are in there only for the money:
They accept anything for publication as long as the
author pays (see, for example, Bohannon (2013) Who's
afraid of peer review? Science 342: 60-65).
Here is a list of questionable
open-access publishers. The Open Access
Scholary Publishers Association says it wants
to set some standards.
- This said, look for
open access sources in the Directory of Open
Access Journals.
- CiteBank is a collection
of open access content from digital libraries,
publishers, and other bibliographic systems.
- A similar source
for older, but often still very helpful literature
is the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
- African Journals
Online's list of African
Open Access Journals in Biology & Life
Sciences, including, for example, the African
Journal of Applied Zoology and Environmental
Biology.
- Eurosurveillance, with a focus
on topics that are of relevance to Europe
- Florida Entomologist,
published by the Florida Entomological Society
- The Journal of the European Mosquito
Control Association (previously called the
European Mosquito Bulletin), the official journal of
the (surprise!) European Mosquito Control
Association
- Journal of Insect Science
- Journal of Vector Borne Diseases,
published by the Indian National Institute of Malaria
Research on behalf of the Indian Council of Medical Research
- Journal
of
Vector Ecology, courtesy of the Society
of
Vector
Ecology
- Malaria Journal
- Malaria World Journal does
not even charge the authors!
- Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz
of the Brazilian Fundação
Oswaldo
Cruz
- Neotropical Entomology,
published by the Sociedade
Entomológica do Brasil
- From the Public Library of Science
family of journals:
- Psyche - a journal of
entomology, founded and sponsored by the Cambridge Entomological Club.
Their archive goes all the way back
to the first issue from 1874.
